Argeles

The Languedoc is a well guarded secret by the French. They're keeping quiet about the sandy, generous beaches, the charismatic medieval towns, the vast fields of fragrant lilac lavender and the fiery wild white horses of the Camargue.

With its clear blue skies, golden sandy beaches and warm crystal clear waters Languedoc is a very popular holiday destination for both sun worshippers and watersports enthusiasts.

The newer stylish resorts on the coast such as Cape d’Agde have become some of the most favoured of the French tourist havens.

Travel back in time as you move inland and visit the rural towns and pretty villages. Vineyards flourish in Languedoc with Béziers being the wine producing capital of the region.

Places to visit

Gorges de Lavall - 6 miles

For some non-beach activity, take a hike along these mountain paths and be awed by the scenery and views.

Le Racou - 4 miles

This sleepy fisherman's village has a glorious silky soft beach, where you might be lucky enough to spot one of it's regular visitors: a dolphin.

Port Argelès - 3 miles

This modern marina has endless cafés and restaurants and some good shopping as well.

Argelès-Sur-Mer - 2 miles

Relax in one of the sunniest spots in France, close to the Spanish border. Or for some evening entertainment put on your glad rags and enjoy the buzzing nightlife.

Collioure - 7 miles

Enjoy an espresso or some more-ish ice-cream in one of the many cafés that line this picturesque fishing port. Many local artists hang out here and perhaps your children will be inspired to produce their own masterpiece.

Banyuls - 15 miles

Visit the local 'caves' (wine cellars) to sample the delicious sherry-style aperitif named after the village. Whilst at Banyuls, go a little further and you'll be in Spain - it's just 40 minutes from the parc.

Castelnou - 15 miles

Quaint 10th century medieval village set in Pyreneen hillside.

Gorges de La Fou - 25 miles

One of the great spectacles of the eastern Pyrenees - 1500m of metal walkway between 200m high walls. Do you dare?
